A spotlight on one of our mentors:

Liz Tutino

Liz is mom to four children. She lives in Bel Air and works as a psychiatric rehabilitation counselor. She is also involved in Women's Ministries at MCC and leads a discipleship group. For fun, Liz enjoys reading, gardening and seeing Broadway shows. She says that during her MOPS years she didn't worry about the house being clean and she taught her children to work with her. Some resources she found helpful were Focus on the Family, How to Make Your Children Mind without Losing Yours and The Creative Counterpart. Liz believes that a relationship with God gives mothers the strength and wisdom to keep things in perspective. Motherhood draws you closer to God because you can begin to understand the love He has for his children. She would like to encourage MOPS moms to create traditions, not just during the holidays but throughout the year. These traditions create lifetime memories.

St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer facility where families never pay for treatments that are not covered by insurance. In 1962, the survival rate for acute lymphoblastic lymphoma (ALL), the most common form of childhood cancer, was 4 percent. Today the survival rate is 94%, thanks to research and treatment protocols developed at St. Jude.

SARC, a non-profit for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and child abuse, is in need of some gently used baby items (crib, high chair, pack n play, etc.). Your donation is tax deductible and would directly help some moms with babies and young children that have been displaced from their homes because of domestic violence. If anyone is interested they can call SARC at 410-836-8431 and ask to speak to Stacie. Drop off is located in downtown Bel Air.

Letter From The Editor
Hi MOPS Moms!

At our April MOPS meetings we are going to be talking about "Learning to Play, Playing to Learn". In the name of full disclosure I have to say I think I am a totally boring mom when it comes to playing. When one of my sons says "Play with me mommy" I think, "Really? You want to play with me?" and even "Do I have to?" I am usually good for about 10-15 minutes of sitting on the floor and crashing trucks into walls of blocks, but then I am ready to move on. I am quick to resist the urge to toss all the pillows in the house into a mountain or to break out the finger paints because we all know who is going to clean it all up! And then of course the mommy-guilt sets in because of the 10 strangers this week alone who told me to enjoy this age while I can and that they won't want to be with me forever... It's a vicious cycle! I am guessing I am not completely alone in feeling like this and so our hope is to provide you with some fun, intentional ways to play with your kids. You will have plenty of time to wander through our "toy expo" where there will be tables of different kinds of toys like the ones you have at home. Each table will be hosted by a teacher and a child so you can see firsthand some new ideas of how to use what you have to help encourage your child developmentally. It's sure to be a fun night!

April is also our kick-off for pre-registration for Fall 2011! Have you heard the big news?! We are going to be starting our own group to meet the unique needs of moms with preschoolers and younger called MomsConnect. A big email making this announcement went out last week. If you missed it for some reason, contact your table leader for all the details. In short, everything you love about our current MOPS group is going to stay the same, but we will also have more flexibility to expand some areas we think will better serve you. MomsConnect will launch in Fall 2011 with "Moms of Oz"! We will explore how motherhood impacts our brain, our heart and our courage, as well as many other fun and engaging topics! To make sure you do not miss out on this exciting opportunity, pre-register anytime between April 12 and our May meetings. You can register at the meetings or online. Registration for one year is $45 (approximately $5/month). Any mom who pre-registers by the May meetings will be entered to win one of nine amazing prizes from companies such as Initials Inc., Lia Sophia, Tastefully Simple, Gorgeous and Green, and Beauticontrol, just to name a few!

I look forward to seeing you this month!

Scientific Discoveries
Peep Science!

Peeps are marshmallows, which are puffed table sugar or sucrose. When you microwave them, the water in the peeps vaporizes, causing bubbles trapped in the sugar to expand and the Peeps to grow and grow. Put a marshmallow Peep on a plate in the microwave. Ask your child to hypothesize about what they think will happen when you turn it on. Heat the Peep for about 20 seconds and watch it expand up to 300% it's normal size.

Egg Float!

Put a hardboiled egg in water. The egg will sink. Tell your children that you are going to add salt to the water and ask them what they think will happen. Once you stir in enough salt the egg will actually float.

Finesse FindersElizabeth Lee Hazen and Rachel Fuller Brown

Hazen and Brown worked together on the research and development of Nystatin, the first non-toxic drug treatment for fungal infections in humans. If you or your baby developed thrush while breastfeeding, you were likely prescribed Nystatin. This anti-fungal antibiotic drug, patented in 1957 was used to cure many disfiguring, disabling fungal infections as well as to balance the effect of many antibacterial drugs. In addition to human ailments, the drug has been used to treat such problems as Dutch Elm's disease and to restore water-damaged artwork from the effects of mold. Elizabeth Lee Hazen and Rachel Fuller Brown were inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1994.
